Dear Sir,
Your blog made an interesting reading and helped me to increase my knowledge about the IT Industry.I am a Dot Net Developer who has worked on ASP.Net,VB.Net and C# technologies. As far as my experience goes it's very difficult to get an opening on Dot Net Technologies as a Fresher ,fellows who get exposure are those who have around 4 to 5 years experience in IT Industry are rolled on to the Dot Net Platform. There are very few companies which offer openings for posts such as Junior Dot Net Developer in the IT Industry. My solution to this is that tap the natural Talent such as his Programming ability that is Analytical and Logical skills and look for people for take self initiative and are self motivated and give the fellow a chance to prove his skills and absorbing ability. By doing this you can help the fellow to carve his career.
                                                             Thanks & Regards

I too think all your findings are pretty much accurate. I rate myself as one of those lost souls (an engineer who's now an Operations Analyst in the Credit Cards Domain) --> switched 'coz the kind of managers I had in the IT domain were simply not worth it - only to realise it's even worse in the Finance domain. Simply too reluctant to step out due to 2 main reasons - my current job simply pays much higher than what I would equivalently get in the Tech Domain and the 2nd one being I do like what I am doing.

That apart, Tech is still in my genes and am doing quite a bit of research in RIA / AJAX / Flex / JavaFX and all that esoteric stuff. I practically know every buzzword out there on the market right now - and it's all too messed up for my comfort at the moment.

thanks for putting these statistics here.
I think open source technologies are favored in Indian market than using proprietory technologies like Flex, AIR and Silverlight. That makes perfect sense to me.

Hello people,
I myself am on the lookout for a job, and this is what I feel. I completely expected the result of Mumbai being in the lower ranks, but coming out last is a little surprising. The salaries being less is an issue, and so is the kind of work. I've worked in core systems companies earlier in Pune, but am basically from Mumbai, and am finding it very hard to find some good and well paying job here. It's a fact. Not too many companies here into systems domain or say the kind of stuff I like doing which involves large amounts of data, etc.... So, you either get okay work with an okay salary, or work in some finance co. with a great salary. Sometimes people like me are just happy with coding and problem solving. We don't want to become managers. We are happy retiring as coders. That's what gives us the kick. People don't get that.... Plus, the general feeling is also that Bangalore has so many cos. that if someone ever decides to leave, they don't have to look too far.
I was pretty impressed with your careers page, esp. the way you've mentioned that you conduct the interview, the puzzles page and the "proofing period". Sounds like a good place to work....

Hi,
Would you folks mind if I asked you all a question? If I am looking to work in Delhi/Gurgaon, which platform should I target with a view of finding work- Java/JEE, .Net or any other?

Would appreciate responses a lot.

Thanks.

If you are proud enough to say that you are a team of intelligent people with uncommon ideas, you should give chance to all intelligent people out there, especially those with IQ at least 2 more than Albert Einstein. If such a person does not get through then it means that the manager taking the interview is all talks and no walks. All that person has done is take credit for someone else work.

All the data presented above is not that useful. What a person's resume says is not important, neither is the work he has done before. All that matters is what he can do. If you can find the ability of a person and then post that data, you would do wonders for the software industry.

Companies in Mumbai may not be paying less than those in
Bangalore or other cities, but effectively it works out that way
due to the (much) higher cost of living (especially residential
property) in Mumbai (municipal limits).

Having lived and worked in Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore, I
can say for a fact that since IT is the number one industry
(both in terms of number of jobs available and salary)
in Pune and Bangalore, a lot more people are drawn towards
IT as a career option. Mumbai, however, has been the
financial capital of India, and even though it may be having
more engineering colleges than any other city, many
engineers who are just graduating/ recently graduated seem
to just want to rush for an MBA and on to a higher paying
sales/marketing/finance job. The findings are not at all
surprising.

If there was any data available about the number of people
employed in different industries across different cities, that
might give further clues about this.

Nice counts...well, its not seems surprising about the pune ranking higher than mumbai.
If i am not wrong, the data shows the developers numbers and not the infrastructure part. Mumbai is full of datacenters of almost all banks and a good number of indian corporate offices which requires the infrastructure support (Admin(unix/windows), storage, middleware, networking, DBA and many more) and hence developers really play a small role in mumbai.

@pandurang: i will acknowledge that we are a large software ecosystem the day a company of the brand standing / size of google / facebook / yahoo / msft is started and operated from india. in that respect we have a long way to go. Pursuant to this research I have spent a few days conducting research between the quality of developers in India vs the US. The difference is significantly palpable. I will publish some of the findings shortly. Meanwhile we have introduced an expat recruitment program to attract talent from the US and other countries :). You can check details at http://wiki.directi.com/display/CAR/Expat+Recruitment+Program+beta
